Tribute to Robert Darby

It is with great sadness that we have to announce the passing of former club member Robert Darby.

He came to fencing initially as a parent, with his son Dan learning to fence at Three Rivers Young Blades (now FCL Herts), later joining the TRYB Committee with wife Nicki, where he became the club armourer before taking up the sport himself after a parent’s taster session and subsequent beginner’s course at WFC. He went on to win the best placed novice trophy at our annual club championships in 2015, making many friends at the club in the process and the whole family were often to be seen together supporting Rob and Dan at events in Herts and further afield.

Rob took up the challenge of helping with the WFC armoury and co-ordinating repairs with Steve Hyman for a short time before moving away from the area with his family.

For those that got to know him his mischievous smile and warm personality will be sadly missed and our thoughts are with his wife Nicki and children Dan and Lucia.

The funeral will take place on Friday 17th March at 3pm at St Mary’s Church, Great Warley, Brentwood. Then on to De Rougemont Manor Hotel in Great Warley.

For anyone wishing to make a donation either personally or through the club the details are below:

Watford medals at the Herts Mixed Senior Competition

Watford fencers took away four medals from last weekend’s HFA Mixed Senior Competition! Well done to Joe Wright for picking up silver in foil, Tony Bardell for winning bronze in sabre, and Lajos Fazekas and Amy Silk who took the silver and bronze in Épée, respectively.

You’re all a testament to the cross-weapon strength of WFC!

Watford Fencing Club hosted another fantastic Club Championship on Sunday the 16th of October, with a great turnout, great food and great fencing! There were 4 sabreurs, 11 épéeists, 15 foilists and lots of family and friends to enjoy the day. The standard of fencing was extremely high  (a testament to the hard work and commitment of the membership and our coaches) from both experienced fencers, and those who are only a couple of months into their first Beginners’ Course.

Herts County Team Championship Silver and Bronze!

On the 12th of June Watford Fencing Club pitched one sabre, one épée and two foil teams for the Hertfordhsire County Team Championship. Our sabre and épée teams battled valiantly, but it was our two foil teams that bagged silver and bronze, with Watford Foil Team A narrowly missing out on gold by 3 points to PDFA. Well done #TeamWatford!
